The animals of the game each have their own story to tell. Beneath are the animals currently in the game and their purpose, tricks and implications.

Note that some of the rules relating to individual cards can be varied to suit. The game itself can be varied also. A common variation is to tally up scores after 9 holes and start again for the back 9. In doing so, players holding cards retain them for the start of the second 9, and if they are unable to pass on negative cards then they wear the penalty again at completion of the round.

The Cat - Greenside bunker

Caught in a trap…. the Cat is yours if you land in a greenside trap. If you do not get out of the trap with your first attempt then the Cat is yours again, together with the Caterpillar for 2 or more shots out of a bunker. If one of your opponents followed you into a trap and you fluff your first attempt out then the Cat will come back… to you. Equally, if your opponent then flums his attempt out he'll receive the Cat and the Caterpillar from you. Choose your timing well.

The Cat - Greenside bunker

The Camel - Fairway bunker

Like the Cat, the Camel is yours when you land in a trap, however it must be a fairway trap to get the Camel. There can be some argument as to what is a fairway trap versus a greenside bunker. If the trap meets the green then it is greenside. If there is a trap between your trap and the green then it is fairway.

Also like the Cat, if one of your opponents followed you into a trap and you then fail in your first attempt out, the Camel is yours again. If your opponent then fails his attempt out he'll receive the both Camel and the Caterpillar from you.

The Camel - Fairway bunker

The Monkey - Hit a tree

Some arguments arise whether the tree is just branches or includes foliage. Foliage wins!

Is a shrub considered a tree? Yes!

If you suspect that the ball hit a tree but all were unsighted and no sound was heard then the benefit of the doubt rests with the player.

The Monkey - Hit a tree

The Frog - Water hazard

To get the frog your ball generally has to get wet, unless the area is staked as a water hazard and you are within the hazard boundary, in which case you are deemed to have croaked also.

You may wish to have the frog represent any staked hazard rather than just a water hazard.... be sure to make this clear prior to play.

The Frog - Water hazard

The Bear – Out of Bounds

Out of bounds is generally pretty evident as the course boundaries are likely to be marked. If you are lost out of bounds then you'll also be the lucky recipient of the Kangaroo if you have Pack 2 !

The Bear Out of Bounds

The Snake – 3 or more putts

The Snake is a favourite from many golf games and commands the most laughter and generally the most recipients in Golf Animals. 3 or more putts and the Snake is yours, but make your choices carefully… it's not always wise to mark your ball when the Snake is about, so consider your opponents likely outcomes and make your decision. And beware, the Snakes BIG brother is coming for those of you who swordfight the ball on the green for 4 or more …..

A variation is to make snakes cumulative. The card still passes to the last recipient of the event, and whoever is left holding the card buys drinks. However for the purposes of settling bets, ALL snakes may count as negative events, so carry a cost.

The Snake 3 or more putts

The Bird - net Birdie

Congratulations on a fine display. Our feathered friends seem to take pride of place in the game of golf, and the Bird is the first in line while the others get a little more difficult to snare. A net Birdie takes your handicap into account, so consider who else has yet to hole out before you leap in to putt early!

The Bird - net Birdie

The Eagle - net Eagle

A great prize and one that tends to stay with you, hopefully until the end of the round. Like the Bird, the Eagle is based on your net result after handicap, so again consider your opponents scores on the hole before jumping in. Given the greater prize of the Eagle you may wish to double its value in the game, but you'll need to agree on using multipliers prior to commencing the round.

The Eagle - net Eagle

The Rat - Air swing

Hmmm… smell a Rat?  Well you may not smell this one, or even hear it, but it's worth keeping an eye out for it, particularly if you are holding the card! Often the Rat carries an additional penalty of a shout or two of drinks at the end of the round…. does yours?

The Rat - Air swing

The Mouse - Not past the ladies tees

Are you a man or a Mouse? If you don't finish past the ladies tees your partners will answer that one for you without a doubt!

Ladies, feel free to devise your own event for the Mouse, though we've seen the odd ball leaving the tee but still not getting past those red tee blocks!!

The Mouse - Not past the ladies tees

The Gorilla - Drove the wrong fairway

Sometimes strategy dictates that it's a better line down some other fairway to get to the pin you're after. Are you still willing to do so with the guarantee of the Gorilla for the privilege? Consider the remaining holes and the shape of your opponents tee shots, and maybe the risk is worth it! But be sure that if you are on the wrong fairway the Gorilla is yours for now.

The Gorilla - Drove the wrong fairway

The Bulldog - Putting off the green

So you finally made it to the green… you line up your putt… you strike it… too hard… and watch it slide off the green on the other side! You've got yourself a new friend… the Bulldog. Remember, you must be on the green and finish off the green before you can take his leash.

The Bulldog - Putting off the green

The Caterpillar - 2 or more from a bunker

You've snared the Cat or the Camel, and now the ultimate insult… the Caterpillar is yours as well. 2 or more out of a bunker is all it takes, and beware, there are more cards coming in case you end up in another bunker, or take too many more shots out. On the other hand, a sand save may soon be well rewarded!!

The Caterpillar - 2 or more from a bunker

The Kangaroo - Lost ball

So your 5 minutes is up and you still can't find your ball! Bouncing down the fairway, courtesy of an enthusiastic opponent comes the Kangaroo, right into your pouch. All you can do is wish the worst on those you're playing against in hope that it'll bound away later in your round.

The Kangaroo - Lost ball

The Crow - Zero putts

Whether you chip in or putt in from off the green, it's always something to Crow about. Now you'll receive a card as a reminder of a great shot!

The Crow - Zero putts

The Vulture - Won the hole by 3 or more shots

You're either playing against absolute choppers or lady luck is on your shoulder! She's big, she's ugly, and has a nose that'd frighten a plastic surgeon… she's the Vulture. And your opposition will think you're a Vulture when you clean them up by 3 or more shots. It's generally not an easy feat, so consider making the Vulture a triple multiplier before your round… you'll be pleased you did if you're carrying it home!

The Vulture - Won the hole by 3 or more shots
